It can work. As per some of the videos below, courts actually like it if you’re honest about your life circumstances in explaining why you are having trouble making ends meet. As you can see and hear in the videos, the Consumers who are respective, smile, have no attitude, and are honest and contrite about their situation, seem to get the most favorable outcomes.
A few examples on how honesty can go a long way:

Woman explains she doesn't have money to pay $400 in parking tickets. Judge dismisses the $400 and leaves an old $50 fine, but then dismisses it when the woman reveals that would leave her with 5 dollars.

Operating room professional in scrubs gets a break.

Man gets a speeding ticket. He admits to the judge that he was speeding and that he told the police officer that pulled him over that he was speeding. Judge dismisses the case because of his honesty. Defendant says: "At the end of the day you gotta accept your faults"
